New York City Travel Guide

Hello from the city that never sleeps! I’m Rochelle Wilson from Wilson Travel Blog, and today I’m sharing our incredible journey through the concrete jungle—New York City.

From basketball thrills at Madison Square Garden to climbing the crown of Lady Liberty, every day was packed with something unforgettable. So, if you’re planning your own NYC adventure, I’ve got stories, tips, and must-dos to help you along the way. Let’s dive in!

Things to Do in New York City

Watch a Game or Tour Madison Square Garden

Visiting Madison Square Garden was a definite highlight—especially for our two kids who are obsessed with basketball. The atmosphere, the history, and just being in the same venue where legendary moments have happened… it was pure magic.

Travel Tip: If you can’t catch a game, take the MSG All Access Tour. You’ll learn some fun behind-the-scenes facts and see the arena in a whole new way.

Climb to the Crown of the Statue of Liberty

Yes, we did it! We climbed all the way up to the crown of the Statue of Liberty. It was a bit of a workout (those stairs are no joke), but the sense of accomplishment at the top was worth every step.

Local Insight: You need to book tickets to the crown months in advance—it’s one of the few areas with limited access. And trust me, bring water and wear comfy shoes!

Cruise Down the Hudson River

There’s nothing quite like riding down the Hudson with the Manhattan skyline rising beside you. The views were breathtaking, especially as the sun began to set.

Personal Note: We took a sightseeing cruise that gave us front-row views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Perfect for a family photo op!

Day Out at Coney Island

Coney Island was such a treat. The rides, the boardwalk, the sea breeze—it had that classic, old-school amusement park vibe. And yes, we made sure to grab one of Nathan’s famous hot dogs. Delicious!

Hot Tip: Go on a weekday if you can—it’s a lot less crowded and easier to enjoy the Luna park with kids.

Take in the Peace at Bryant Park

Right in the middle of the city’s hustle, Bryant Park was a lovely little pause. We enjoyed a coffee, let the kids run around, and just soaked in the atmosphere. It’s a great spot to catch your breath.

Fun Fact: In winter, Bryant Park transforms into a wonderland with a skating rink and holiday market.

Rockefeller Centre & the Ice Rink Vibes

During our visit, they were prepping the iconic Rockefeller ice skating rink for the season. Even though it wasn’t open yet, just being there brought that festive buzz.

Local Tip: If you’re visiting during winter, come early or book ahead—this rink gets busy!

View from the Top of the Rock

I can’t explain how surreal it felt looking out over the glowing city lights from the Top of the Rock. The Empire State Building shining in the distance and the grid of streets below—just wow.

Travel Tip: For sunset or night views, book your time slot in advance. The light changes are unreal and totally photo-worthy.

Must-Sees in New York City

There’s so much to take in, but here are a few absolute essentials to fit into your itinerary:

  • Times Square – Go at night for the full effect of the lights and buzz.
  • Central Park – Rent a bike, stroll around, or just people-watch—it’s a slice of calm in the city.
  • Brooklyn Bridge – Walk it at golden hour for stunning skyline views.
  • Museum of Natural History – The dinosaur skeletons alone are worth the visit (especially for the kids).
  • Broadway Show – Even a budget-friendly matinee will leave you buzzing with joy.

Necessary Things to Know Before You Go

Don’t Rent a Car

NYC traffic is legendary—for all the wrong reasons. Stick to subways, buses, ferries, and walking. It’s faster and way less stressful.

Plan & Book Ahead

Popular attractions like the Statue of Liberty crown, Top of the Rock, or Broadway shows often sell out. Booking early saves time and disappointment.

Budget Smart

We took advantage of free things like Bryant Park, Central Park, and walking the Brooklyn Bridge. Passes like the New York CityPASS helped us bundle and save on big attractions.

Try the Local Eats

You haven’t been to NYC until you’ve folded a pizza slice and eaten it with your hands. Trust me, no forks allowed!

Get Travel Insurance

Things can go sideways—even in the best-planned trips. Having travel insurance gave us peace of mind, especially with kids.

Final Thoughts

New York City truly is a place where every street corner tells a story. From the electric energy of Times Square to the serene moments in Central Park, and all the history in between—it’s an experience like no other.

Our kids still talk about the Statue of Liberty climb and those Nathan’s hot dogs. And I’ll never forget the view from Top of the Rock. If NYC isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Pack your walking shoes, bring your camera, and get ready for a trip that will leave you inspired, tired, and completely in love with the Big Apple.

Until next adventure,
