After landing at Melbourne Airport, I jumped in a cab for the 25-minute drive to the Novotel South Wharf. It cost around $55, give or take depending on traffic. The location couldn’t be more convenient — perched right next to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, and directly linked to the DFO South Wharf shopping precinct.
Within walking distance to Crown Casino, SEA LIFE Aquarium, and a gentle riverside stroll from the CBD, it’s a prime spot for both business and leisure.

Checking In
The shimmering golden tower stood out immediately as we pulled up. The reception is a few levels up, and the elevated lobby offers a sleek, minimalist welcome. Check-in was smooth and friendly, and I was up to my Junior Suite in no time. I’d stayed here once before, so I had a pretty good idea of what to expect.
The Room – Junior Suite
My Junior Suite was spacious and bright, with a pillowtop king bed, crisp linens, and sweeping city views through floor-to-ceiling windows. The layout is practical and uncluttered. However, I did notice that the table and chairs from my previous stay were gone — a small change, but it made the room feel slightly less complete.
Still, it was comfortable and well-equipped with a large LED TV, coffee machine, and a rainfall shower in the modern bathroom.
Dining & Drinks
I had dinner downstairs at MR. Carpano Dining & Bar, which serves up hearty Italian classics in a stylish setting. The pasta was spot-on, and the staff were cheerful and attentive. The adjoining bar has a decent wine list and some solid cocktails, perfect for an easy night in.
Location & Amenities
Location is the real win here. Not only are you right next to MCEC, but you’ve also got quick access to Marvel Stadium and the city via Seafarers Bridge. For shoppers, the DFO right next door is a paradise.
Fitness lovers will appreciate the 24-hour gym — though during my visit, the air conditioning was down, which made it feel more like a sauna than a gym. Hopefully just a temporary hiccup.
A Minor Bump
One night, during a very busy weekend (Formula One, no less), the fire alarm went off in the early hours. Guests wandered out groggily, unsure of what was happening.
It turned out to be a false alarm, but the lack of clear follow-up or reassurance left a few guests rattled. A simple announcement or apology would’ve gone a long way.

Overall Thoughts
Despite the minor glitches — the missing table and the late-night alarm — my stay at Novotel South Wharf was genuinely enjoyable. The location is unbeatable, the staff are warm, and the suite was a relaxing base for a few days in the city.
It’s not ultra-luxe, but it doesn’t try to be. It delivers clean, modern comfort with great convenience. I’d rate it a solid 8.5 out of 10.
