Melbourne Hosier Lane Street Art

Always interesting taking a stroll down Hosier Lane in Melbourne. No matter how often I visit, it always feels new. This cobbled laneway, just across from Federation Square, is a chaotic explosion of graffiti, murals, stencils, and street poetry. It’s raw. It’s loud. And it’s brilliant.

A Living, Breathing Canvas

Hosier Lane isn’t just a place—it’s an ever-changing gallery. Artists repaint it constantly, often overnight. What you see today might be gone tomorrow. I’ve visited on back-to-back weeks and it was completely transformed.

A History of Repaint and Reinvention

Back in 2013, more than 100 artists took part in a massive repaint called “All Your Walls”, and since then, the creativity hasn’t stopped.

Local Legends and Global Names

While legends like Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and Invader have left their mark here, it’s Melbourne’s own who keep the vibe alive—Ha Ha, Rone, Prism, and plenty more.

Standout Street Art Moments

One of the highlights from my recent visit was spotting DVATE’s mural of Ben Simmons—incredibly detailed and striking. It’s those big, bold pieces that always pull a crowd (and make the perfect photo stop).

Loop Around Rutledge

Don’t miss Rutledge Lane, which loops off Hosier. It’s just as packed with colour and just as photogenic. I’ve found some of my favourite pieces down there.

Art, Food and Atmosphere

After soaking in the art, I usually grab tapas and a drink at Movida Next Door, or tacos at Tres a Cinco. Art always pairs well with good food and wine, right?

Overall Impression

Hosier Lane is one of those places that sticks with you. It’s bold, unpredictable, and totally Melbourne. If you’re nearby, go for a wander—you won’t regret it.
